  • Health Concerns when Working with Animals?

Is it appropriate for people working with animals to have health concerns? If so, based on your experiences, what should those concerns be and how should they be resolved?

Most organization's that implement solid volunteer training programs will likely (and hopefully) also have proper screening of animal's prior to a volunteer's involvement. I would want to know if an animal were up to date on shots. All animals will enter flight or fight when stressed, so ideally programs will screen animals to ensure volunteers are kept safe. Non aggressive handling techniques and safety training would also be valuable. Doggone Safe (http://www.doggonesafe.com/) has a quality program in this regard which highlights safety information and how to properly read a dog's body language. I love volunteering when I'm able to, and have worked with several fantastic organizations who do a great job at keeping volunteers and animals safe.
