  • Golden Years, Golden Opportunities: Advice for Seniors from Seniors

Are you are senior who has only "hit her stride" after extended exploration and experimentation with a variety of volunteering opportunities? What advice do you have to share with fellow seniors about selecting appropriate service activities?

Hello. I'm retired and volunteering at a number of places. My primary volunteer position is with the City of San Mateo, in the City Manager's Office, supporting our Volunteer Coordinator. I enjoy using my social media and communication skills to support volunteerism in my city, plus I love having a destination that I can walk to three times a week. My advice is to start volunteering, explore additional volunteer opportunities, and not to settle on just one thing for years -- in other words, be a lifelong learner! I'm always on the lookout for new short-term volunteer opportunities in addition to my city position.

When I retired, I signed up for graphic design courses at my local college and ended up with a paid internship to create artwork and quotes for caregivers of elderly parents. I invite you to see my images on 22 boards at or follow me on When you volunteer or keep seeking new projects, you never know where you land!

Best wishes with this bulletin board.
